Insurance & reinsurance

This represents a significant part of the work done in Chambers. Individual Members have a very strong reputation in this area with detailed practical experience of the Lloyd's and companies' markets in London as well as other insurance and reinsurance markets elsewhere in the world. The work done extends over all types of insurance (eg marine, aviation, business interruption, liability, medical, professional negligence, property, fidelity, satellite, life assurance, protection and indemnity) and reinsurance (e.g. excess of loss, quota share, facultative) in respect of a wide variety of disputes including coverage disputes and avoidance disputes based upon, for example, non-disclosure and misrepresentation. Individual Members have considerable experience of the internal workings of the various markets including disputes concerning Lloyd's members and managing agents and with third parties eg insurance brokers and other intermediaries. The work also embraces a wide range of other non-contentious work including advice with regard to the setting up of insurance companies, compliance with statutory and other regulatory requirements, (eg under the Insurance Companies Acts) and the drafting of standard-form policy wordings. Members of Chambers also frequently act as mediators and arbitrators in reinsurance disputes.
