Sovereign Immunity in Shipping: A Russian and UK perspective

A seminar hosted by Clyde & Co in association with the International Law Association and the British-Russian Law Association.

This seminar was chaired by Professor Dan Sarooshi of Essex Court Chambers with presentations from Professor Valery Musin of Clyde & Co's St Petersburg affiliated office and John Whittaker of Clyde & Co's International Trade, Energy and Arbitration team in London.

During the afternoon differing law and practice on sovereign immunity relating to shipping was looked at, including:

  • English law and the implications of sovereign immunity for those in the shipping industry
  • The interplay between shipping and sovereign immunity in Russia
  • The commercial impact of these issues
